چکیده

An iterative numerical technique has been developed to simulate in detail the dynamics of a shallow-layer gravity settler. Currently acknowledged models apply only to specific equipments at steady-state and laboratory scale [Jeelani SAK, Hartland S. The continuous separation of liquid/liquid dispersions. Chem Eng Sci 1993;48(2):239–54]. To our knowledge, no study has ever addressed the dynamic simulation of a gravity settler. In this paper a direct numerical technique is presented for computing the thickness and drop-size composition of the dispersion band formed in a shallow-layer settler under steady-state and transient conditions. This technique is an extension for the settler of the one used on the stirred vessel by Ribeiro [Ribeiro LM. Simulação Dinâmica de Sistemas Lı́quido–Lı́quido, Um novo Algoritmo com Potencialidades de Aplicação em Controlo. PhD thesis, Universidade do Minho, Portugal; 1995]. 2007 Elsevier Ltd. and Civil-Comp Ltd. All rights reserved.

Numerical Investigation of dip angle direction of foundation Joint on nonlinear dynamic response of concrete gravity dams

The stability of a gravity dam on a jointed rock foundation might be endangered by weak joints that may be present in the fracture network of the bed rock. A review of the literature shows that there are few studies of the effect of a weak joint in the foundation rock on the stability of dams. This research uses the finite difference numerical modelling software ABAQUS to model a gravity dam, t...

Modelling of Love Waves in Fluid Saturated Porous Viscoelastic Medium resting over an Exponentially Graded Inhomogeneous Half-space Influenced by Gravity

The present article is devoted to a theoretical study on Love wave vibration in a pre-stressed fluid-saturated anisotropic porous viscoelastic medium embedded over an inhomogeneous isotropic half-space influenced by gravity. The expression of dispersion has been achieved with the help of mathematical tools such as variable separable method and Whittaker’s function’s expansion under certain boun...

Numerical Modelling of Dynamic Compaction in Dry Sandy Soils for Determination of Effective Print Spacing

Dynamic compaction (DC) is a widely used soil improvement method in dry and/or saturated soils. The design of DC treatment is usually carried out based on the past experiences and empirical relations. In order to clarify the ambiguities in DC processes, numerical modeling of DC in dry granular soils has been considered using a dynamic finite element code. Using the developed model, two design c...

Modelling Aspects of Wastewater Treatment Processes

Wastewater treatment processes are inherently dynamic because of the large variations in the influent wastewater flow rate, concentration and composition. Moreover, these variations are to a large extent not possible to control. The adaptive behaviour of the involved microorganisms imposes further difficulties in terms of time-varying process parameters. Mathematical models and computer simulat...

Sensitivity analysis of time lapse gravity for monitoring fluid saturation changes in a giant multi-phase gas reservoir located in south of Iran

The time lapse gravity method is a widely used technique to monitor the subsurface density changes in time and space. In hydrocarbon reservoirs, the density variations are due to different factors, such as: substitution of fluids with high density contrast, water influx, gas injection, and the variation in reservoir geomechanical behavior. Considering the monitoring of saturation changes in the...
